The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently issued an Alert - Level 2, Practice Enhanced Precautions, confirming various countries have circulating poliovirus.

As of September 26, 2022, the CDC stated before visiting any of the identified destinations, including the United Kingdom, adults who previously completed the full, routine polio vaccine series receive a single, lifetime booster dose of inactivated polio vaccine booster known as Imovax Polio® Ipol® Vaccine.

And, children should be up to date on their routine polio vaccines.

The CDC recommends that children get four doses of the polio vaccine.

Various polio vaccines are available in the USA, offered by most clinics and travel pharmacies.

This CDC Travel Advisory did not include the state of New York, where poliovirus has been detected in various wastewater systems.

As of September 28, 2022, the CDC is not endorsing polio boosters for New York visitors.

Previously, the World Health Organization reaffirmed that the risk of international spread of poliovirus remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.

And the Pan America Health Organization confirmed on September 21, 2022, polio vaccination coverage has fallen below 80% in nearly all of South America.
