The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently reported air travelers to have yet to surpass pre-pandemic levels.

As of November 19, 2022, airport screening by TSA was about 97% activity compared to 2019.

TSA recorded the heaviest passenger screening volume in its history on the Sunday following Thanksgiving in 2019, where Transportation Security Officers screened nearly 2.9 million passengers at checkpoints.

On that same day in 2021, nearly 2.5 million passengers were screened.

Will air travel in the U.S. increase during Thanksgiving week?

The TSA anticipates airport security checkpoints nationwide will be very busy this holiday travel season.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske commented on November 17, 2022, "We are prepared to handle the projected increase in travel volumes next week."

Travelers or families of passengers with disabilities and/or medical conditions may call the TSA Cares helpline at 855-787-2227 at least 72 hours before travel with any questions about screening procedures and find out what to expect at the security checkpoint. TSA Cares also arranges assistance at the checkpoint for travelers with specific needs.
