Measles Outbreaks March 2023

Measles cases worldwide increased by about 80% during 2022 compared with 2021, and experts warned of increasing outbreaks in 2023. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), measles is a highly contagious, vaccine-preventable disease. About 90% of unprotected people will become infected when exposed to the measles virus. In the United Kingdom (U.K.), the NHS recommends vaccination as the best way to prevent measles outbreaks in children. However, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) estimates that in 2021 more than 1.7 million children in 28 countries and territories of the Americas did not receive an initial dose of the measles vaccine by their first birthday.

As of February 28, 2023, the CDC reported three measles cases in 2023 and 121 measles cases in six U.S. jurisdictions during 2022, and in 2021, a total of 49 measles cases were reported by five jurisdictions.

The CDC's top ten global measles outbreaks as of March 16, 2023, were led by India, with 47,979 cases. In 2021, an estimated 9 million cases and 128,000 deaths from measles were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, the CDC published a Watch-Level 1, Practice Usual Precautions notice regarding measles outbreaks in Africa (March 2023) and Afghanistan to alert travelers.

Africa Measles Outbreak March 2023

The U.S. CDC issued a Watch - Level 1, Practice Usual Precautions notice for measles outbreaks in various African countries on March 2, 2023. From the epidemiological week of October 8, 2022, to March 4, 2023, the South Africa NICD confirmed 727 (15.8%) measles cases. And from January 2022 to February 2023, health authorities in South Sudan responded to 4,339 suspected measles cases, including 46 deaths (case fatality ratio: 1.06%).

Australia Measles March 2023

Australia's NSW Health notified people to be alert for symptoms of measles after a Western Sydney infant was diagnosed with the infection. The infant, who is too young to be vaccinated against measles, acquired the infection in India before returning to Sydney and recently spent time while infectious in Parramatta and Westmead in late March 2023. India Measles Outbreak 2023

As a result, the West Bengal Health Department launched a Measles-Rubella Vaccination Campaign on January 9, 2023, focusing on schools. This program was extended into mid-February. Additionally, measles is spreading in Nadapuram, Kozhikode, and Maharashtra in 2023. Between 2019 and 2021, about 56% of children received the recommended two doses of the measles vaccine on schedule, according to India's National Family Health Survey.

Kentucky Measles Outbreak 2023

As of March 3, 2023, the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) has confirmed three recent measles cases. The U.S. CDC issued CDCHAN-00487 on March 3, 2023. On February 24, 2023, the KDPH identified an unvaccinated individual who, while infectious, attended a gathering between February 17–18, 2023, at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky. An estimated 20,000 people from Kentucky, other U.S. states, and countries participated in the event. "Anyone who attended the revival on Feb. 18 (Asbury University) may have been exposed to measles," said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the KDPH, in a press release.

A previous measles case was reported in January 2023, in Powell County, Kentucky, without connections to Ohio's outbreak.

On January 20, 2023, Kentucky confirmed a measles case in December 2022 in Christian County that was associated with Ohio's measles outbreak, according to Kentucky Cabinet of Health and Family Services spokesman Brice Mitchell. As a result, Louisville, Kentucky, and the Jefferson County Public Schools are conducting measles vaccination clinics for about 10,000 unvaccinated students in 2023. In addition, on January 20, 2023, local media reported on-campus measles clinics at Iroquois High School, Marion C. Moore School, Newcomer Academy, and Fern Creek High School on February 7, 2023.

Nepal Measles Outbreak 2023

Ohio Measles Outbreak 2022

The Health Department of the City of Columbas, Ohio, and Franklin County Public Health (FCPH), reported that since June 2022, there have been (85) confirmed measles cases in children, of which (36) were hospitalized as of February 10, 2023.

Paraguay Measles Outbreak 2023

On January 23, 2023, the Paraguay IHR National Focal Point notified the WHO of a confirmed case of measles in the Itapúa Department, Paraguay. Itapúa is close to the southern border of Paraguay with Argentina. Of 181 people surveyed, 107 were vaccinated against measles and rubella, with a coverage of 59%. The official measles vaccination coverage for the first and second doses of MMR in 2021 was reported to be 56% and 55%, respectively,

Philippines Measles Outbreak 2023

The Philippines Department of Health reported the ongoing measles outbreak in 2023 has reached 100. In addition, these. The Philippines reported 589 confirmed measles cases in 2022 and 206 cases in 2021.

South Korea Measles Outbreak 2023

In January 2023, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported a travel-related local measles case. Previously, a measles outbreak with 20 confirmed cases occurred at a children's hospital in Daejeon, South Korea, from March 28 to April 21, 2019.

Utah Measles Case 2023

Salt Lake County Health Department announced on March 23, 2023, a case of measles in an unvaccinated resident who recently traveled outside the U.S. This is the first case of measles in Utah since 2017.

In 2002, there was evidence that the same dose given for two days was associated with a reduced risk of overall mortality and pneumonia-specific mortality.
