High-Dose Flu Vaccine Approved for UK Seniors
The UK has granted marketing authorization for Sanofi Pasteur’s Trivalent Influenza Vaccine High Dose (TIV High Dose) for people 65 years of age and older against influenza disease.
This approval means the UK is the only European country where TIV High Dose is approved.
Additionally, TIV High Dose is now included in the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) advice on influenza vaccines for the 2019/20 influenza season.
This is important news since most flu-related deaths occur among people age 65 or older in industrialized countries.
During the 2017/18 flu season in the UK, of the 3,454 confirmed, flu-related hospital admissions to intensive care or high-dependency units, 42 percent of the cases were in those aged 65 years and older, reported the World Health Organization (WHO).
Worldwide, annual flu epidemics result in 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness, and 290,000 to 650,000 deaths.
TIV High Dose is already approved for seniors in the USA, Canada, Australia, and Brazil said Sanofi.
“This approval is a positive step towards increasing the options available for healthcare professionals to help protect people 65 years of age and older against flu in the UK,” said Hugo Fry, Managing Director at Sanofi UK, in a press release.
People immune defenses naturally decline with advancing age, which can cause a diminished immune response to vaccines. This natural decline also means that older adults are particularly vulnerable to influenza infection and its complications, says the WHO.
The TIV High Dose vaccine has been designed specifically to improve protection against influenza viruses compared to standard dose TIV for seniors.
In the USA, Fluzone High-Dose contains 4 times the antigen of standard-dose inactivated influenza vaccines, which is the part of the vaccine that helps your body build up protection against flu viruses.
Fluzone High-Dose is not recommended for persons with a history of severe allergic reaction to the vaccine or to components other than eggs, reports Sanofi.
Most pharmacies in the USA offer flu shot services for adults.

Vaccines, like any medicine, can have side effects, says the CDC. You are encouraged to report negative side effects of vaccines to the FDA or CDC.
