Japan To Quarantine USA Visitors
Japan announced plans to ask all visitors from the USA to self-quarantine for 2-weeks, starting on March 25, 2020.
This requirement has already been applied to arrivals from 40 countries including China, South Korea, and European nations, following the rapid spread of the virus there.
Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on March 23, 2020, that all those arriving from those countries, including Japanese nationals, are asked to stay at homes, hotels and other facilities, even if they have no symptoms.
This mandatory ‘quarantine’ measure is scheduled to last until the end of April 2020, but officials say it may be extended, depending on the situation.
Previously, Japan's Foreign Ministry urged the public to avoid nonessential travel to the USA because of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus spreading.
This novel coronavirus is causing COVID-19 disease in people around the world.
To better inform international travelers of their health risk when visiting Japan, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the Level 2 Travel Alert for Japan on March 12, 2020.
This CDC Travel Alert was followed on March 19, 2020, by the US Department of State, which issued a Level 4 Do Not Travel Global Advisory.
This State Department advisory states all US citizens should avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19.
If you choose to travel internationally, your travel plans may be severely disrupted, and you may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite timeframe.
If you decide to travel abroad or are already outside the United States:
- Consider returning to your country of residence immediately using whatever commercial means are available.
- Have a travel plan that does not rely on the U.S. Government for assistance.
- Review and follow the CDC’s guidelines for the prevention of coronavirus.

UPDATE: On March 30, 2020, the Japan Times reported Japan's Foreign Ministry raised its travel advisory for the United States, China, South Korea and most of Europe, including Britain, to Level 3, warning Japanese citizens to "avoid all travel" to those countries, according to the sources.
